EuroSys Mid-Career Researcher Award
The EuroSys Mid-Career Research Award aims to honor mid-stage researchers who are 10 to 20 years post-PhD. This award recognizes sustained, high-impact contributions to the computer systems research community in Europe, specifically highlighting individuals who have transitioned from early-career promise to building extensive research programs, mentoring the next generation, and producing influential systems artifacts or publications.
Like its junior counterpart, the Jochen Liedtke Young Researcher award, it is presented annually at the EuroSys conference and celebrates excellence in systems research—broadly construed to cover academic contributions, industrial achievements, and impactful open-source or commercial systems software.
Nomination Procedure
Candidates must be nominated for the Award; self-nominations are not accepted. Members of the selection committee and EuroSys officers may encourage nominations, but may not themselves nominate a candidate. Unsuccessful nominations may be resubmitted in subsequent years. The nomination packet consists of:
A nomination statement of up to 500 words describing the candidate's accomplishments
Biographical information on the candidate (e.g., a Curriculum Vitae)
The names and email addresses of three references (excluding the nominator) who will write letters of recommendation for the candidate. The references should submit their letters of recommendation directly to midcareer-award@eurosys.org
A brief statement of up to 250 words documenting the eligibility of the candidate according to the above eligibility rules
The nomination packet and references should be sent to midcareer-award@eurosys.org by December 1, 2026.
The 2027 committee of the mid-career award comprises:
chair: Herbert Bos: Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam
Selection & Eligibility
The selection committee chooses the recipient based on demonstrated contributions that have had impact and are creative and innovative, along with demonstrated promise for making lasting and fundamental contributions to the field. Contributions may be academic publications, industrial accomplishments, and/or high-impact systems software artefacts. Participation in EuroSys and in the European research community is an additional consideration.
To reflect the spirit of a mid-career milestone, candidates must meet the following criteria:
Post-PhD Window: Candidates must have received their PhD no less than 10 years and no more than 20 years before the nomination deadline. The actual award date of the degree, according to the rules of the institution where the degree was granted, is used as the reference date. Eligibility may be extended for qualified career breaks, such as maternity/paternity leave, obligatory national service, and long-term illness.
Community Connection: In alignment with EuroSys values, candidates should demonstrate active participation, leadership, and a sustained footprint within the European systems research community and the EuroSys conference series. The candidate must have spent a significant fraction of her or his career in Europe, and at the time of nomination must be employed by a European institution (for the purpose of this award, we define Europe broadly as these countries plus Israel). There is no restriction on the nationality of the candidate.
Nomination Requirement: Nominations must be submitted by third parties (self-nominations are not permitted). Selection committee members and active EuroSys officers may encourage nominations but cannot submit them.
Exclusions: Current members of the award selection committee and reigning EuroSys officers are ineligible for the award during their term of service. Unsuccessful nominations may be resubmitted in subsequent years provided the candidate remains within the eligibility window.
